Megan Ireland won an undergraduate research fellowship from the Undergraduate Research Office at The Ohio State University to work with Professor Wyslouzil's Aerosol Research Group this summer.

Ireland, who is a biomedical engineering undergrad and a Humanitarian Engineering Scholar, will be studying Liquid-Liquid Electrospray (LLE) to produce PLGA microspheres encapsulating therapeutic agents for targeted drug delivery.

The objective of PLGA microspheres synthesis via LLE is to show (1) high-throughput synthesis of PLGA microspheres and (2) the encapsulation efficiency of PLGA microspheres produced via LLE vs. standard techniques.

In addition, Megan will be studying the effect of having different surface ligands on the nanoparticles in forming micellar nanocomposites.Parts of this study will include the ligand to polymer interactions, the charge effect, etc

Ireland is working under the direction of 2nd year graduate student Kilho Lee, who is co-advised by Professors Jessica Winter and Barbara Wyslouzil. Dr. Winter's Lab is the Biological and Applied Nanotechnology Laboratory and Dr. Wyslouzil's Lab is the Aerosol Lab.

Ireland will begin her ten weeks of research in June, and present a poster about her research at this fall's Denman Undergraduate Research Forum.

Congratulations, Megan!
