The Ohio State University Research and Innovation Showcase, a celebration of innovation, was held on April 17 at the Ohio Union. The event included TED-style talks from six university researchers, culminating with the presentation of awards.

The Office of Research's Innovators of the Year awards recognize Ohio State researchers who are actively working to promote commercialization of university intellectual property through invention disclosures filed, patents applied for and/or received, technologies licensed, or spin-off companies formed.

Swindle-Reilly is developing a drug-delivery technology to help treat age-related macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 65. Her research has attracted funding from the Ohio Lions Eye Research Foundation (2018 Lois Hagelberger-Huebner Young Investigator Award), Lions VisionGift (2019 Barbara L. Crow Investigator-Concept grant), and other funders. Watch this short video of Dr. Swindle-Reilly discussing how her innovation could reduce the number of painful eye injections patients receive from once a month, to just once or twice a year.

In April 2019, Swindle-Reilly gained further recognition upon being elected Program Chair of the Ophthalmic Biomaterials Special Interest Group of the Society for Biomaterials, an international multidisciplinary society of academic, healthcare, governmental and business professionals dedicated to promoting advancements in all aspects of biomaterial science. Her term commenced in April and will run through 2021.
