As a full professor and chairman of the William G. Lowrie Department of Chemical Engineering, Andre Palmer has a busy schedule. That hasn't stopped him from making time to mentor several undergraduate students -- and to win an award for his efforts.

Palmer received the 2019 Excellence in Undergraduate Research Mentoring Award from the Office of Student Academic Success on April 25. The award, first implemented last year, honors individuals who have demonstrated success in mentoring undergraduates in their research and/or creative inquiry endeavors. Awardees are nominated by undergraduates.

One of the undergraduate students Palmer has mentored is Ivan Susin-Pires, who has enjoyed a great deal of success early in his career.

"From my experience, Dr. Palmer goes beyond advice-giving and knowledge-dispensing: he shares power by serving as a sponsor and an advocate. Based on his attitude and belief towards undergraduate research, I have been able to accomplish more than I thought possible during my undergraduate career," Ivan said.

Last fall, Ivan was selected in the highly-competitive Future Leaders in Chemical Engineering Symposium held at North Carolina State. Symposium organizers invite what they consider to be the top 15 or so undergraduate researchers in the United States for a 1.5 day, all-expenses-paid research symposium. Ivan gave a presentation on his first publication, “Quantification of Active Apohemoglobin Heme-Binding Sites via Dicyanohemin Incorporation," 56: 5245-5259 Biochemistry (2017).

Previously, Ivan won a two-year Pelotonia Research Fellowship; won first place in the 2017 and 2018 Denman Undergraduate Research Forum; first place in the 2017 College of Engineering Undergraduate Research Forum for Engineering and Architecture; and was one of two students to receive the Student Recognition Award for Research from The Ohio State University Board of Trustees in 2018. He was also selected to represent Ohio State at the annual SIICUSP Undergraduate Research Meeting in Sao Paulo, Brazil for 2017 and 2018.

Post-doctoral student Mandar Kathe also received the Excellence in Undergraduate Research Mentoring Award.
