Sharing and Spreading Great Ideas: Winter Participates in 2014 TEDxColumbus STEAM

Posted:

They provoke, challenge, and inspire us. They bring forward “ideas worth spreading” – world-changing ideas that spark deep discussion and help to create change. They are the speakers and performers of TEDxColumbus -- and on Friday, November 7, 2014 from noon to 6 pm on the stage of Capitol Theater at the Riffe Center, Jessica Winter will bring her own unique perspective to the stage.

TED and TEDx: Connecting People with Ideas

So what is TED, anyway? TED, a nonprofit organization devoted to “ideas worth spreading,” is an annual conference which has grown considerably since its inception 25 years ago. TED invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes, and then makes their talks available, for free, at TED.com.

Following in the same spirit of discovery, TEDx is a program of local events (where x = independently organized) that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.

This year’s TEDxColumbus STEAM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Arts-and-Math) selected a diverse and gifted set of speakers to share their research and stories with to the stage. Winter is an established leader in nanobiotechnology and is known for her development of magnetic quantum dots for cell and molecular separations. She has taken advantage of the fact that nanoparticles and biological elements are similar in size to investigate ways to diagnose and thus treat cancer earlier, thereby helping to prolong or even save lives.

In her STEAM talk, Winter will share her personal journey as a cancer researcher who one day found herself on the other side of the cancer research equation. Her research approach – and her life – changed dramatically as a result.

Tickets are available beginning by calling CAPA at 614/469-0939 or Ticketmaster via the capa website. (Note: Service fees are less if you show up in person to the CAPA box office or call.) For more information, please tedx columbus.

Other Recent Recognitions

Winter has won numerous awards, with the latest being the American Chemical Society's 2015 Women Chemists Committee Rising Star Award for excellence in scientific enterprise. The award recognizes ten exceptional women scientists who have demonstrated outstanding promise for contributions to their respective fields. Winter will present her work and receive the award at the 249th National Meeting of the ACS in Denver, CO on Monday, March 23.

Winter is no stranger to being featured in high-profile events. On September 12, 2014, she was featured in the  National Science Foundation’s NSF 360 News Service Boston Museum of Science iTunes podcast.

The podcast is available through the link.

In it, Winter speaks with museum educator Karine Thate about her latest efforts to commercialize quantum dot technologies through the development of a new nanomanufacturing process combining electrospray and self-assembly. The new process will enable Winter to scale up production of her customized micelle-encapsulated quantum dots and “mag dots” for use in biomedical diagnostics.

The effort is an outgrowth of Winter’s prior work and is funded through NSF’s Scalable Nanomanufacturing program with an award to Ohio State University and a sub-award to the Boston Museum of Science.

The podcast was produced by Karine Thate and Susan Heilman at the  Museum of Science in July.
