The Graduate Engineering Open House functions as a graduate program preview for prospective students at The Ohio State University’s Columbus campus. This is a two-day event (October 14th-15th) and provides an opportunity to learn about what College of Engineering has to offer you as a graduate student.

The Ohio State University and its College of Engineering are committed to recruiting the best and brightest students for our graduate engineering programs.  We recognize the critical importance of a diverse student body and are strongly committed to fostering and enhancing diversity within our graduate programs and in the field of engineering.  We welcome and encourage applications from undergraduates with a variety of backgrounds and experiences, including but not limited to; applicants who are from historically underserved and underrepresented populations, female, first generation students, African Americans, American Indians/Native Americans, Hispanic/Latinos.

Event Highlights

Over the course of two days, participants will:

  • Attend workshops on applying to graduate school, writing a great personal statement, career services support provided to our students, summer research opportunities, and funding opportunities at Ohio State and beyond
  • Interact with current and prospective graduate students, faculty, and staff
  • Participate in tours of campus, research labs, and departmental facilities

Friday:

Students will participate in conference-style sessions where they will be able to attend a number of different events throughout the day.  Examples include:

  • Information sessions for each program
  • "Funding your graduate education"
  • "Diverse Graduate Student Perspectives in Engineering"
  • "Exploring the PhD"
  • "Saving lives: Engineers in medicine"
  • and much more...

Saturday:

Students will visit research centers in the College of Engineering.  You will receive a first-hand look at the outstanding facilities at our large, Research I Institution.  Examples include:

Selection Criteria

Participation and attendance is by selection only.

Majors that are encouraged to apply:

  • engineering
  • chemistry
  • computer science
  • mathematics
  • physics

Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) is required to attend.

How to Apply

Click the button to "Apply Today."  The application has three sections.  Please be sure to complete ALL fields before submitting your application.  No attachments are required. Priority Deadline to be considered for funding (see below) is SEPTEMBER 23rd.

Travel stipends will be awarded on a rolling basis beginning in mid-August and will continue to be awarded as funds become available. You will be notified via e-mail if you receive a travel scholarship. Depending on the availability of funds, some scholarships may not be awarded until closer to the event.

Travel Stipends

Travel stipends are available to help reimburse the cost of expenses for students traveling to the Open House event. In order to spread travel funds among as many students as possible, partial stipends may be awarded while funds are available. Stipends will be awarded on a competitive basis. Stipends are not available for students currently studying in the Central Ohio area.

To be considered for a travel stipend, you must apply, meet the eligibility requirements below and select that you would like to be considered for a travel stipend on your application. Award decisions will be made as completed applications are received. 

Eligibility requirements for travel stipend:

  1. Apply by the priority deadline (September 23rd) - students are still encouraged to apply for the program past this priority deadline, but funding availability will be limited and only be awarded on a case-by-case basis
  2. US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  3. Plans to start Graduate School in Autumn 2017
  4. Academically competitive
  5. Help the College achieve their strategic goals by contributing to the diversity of Ohio State University

Application Fee Waivers

Students who attend the two-day event will receive an application fee waiver for their first choice of graduate program in the College of Engineering. Details on how to receive the waiver will be discussed during the event.
